No, my confession is what I watched instead.
I watched the Extreme Masters WoW tournament.
Sorry!
Well, actually I’m not sorry. It was very enjoyable – much more than the WoW tournaments I’d watched before. And what made this event so much better? The commentators.
Hard to Explain
"I watched the Extreme Masters WoW tournament. Sorry!"
E-sports casters are a mixed bunch in terms of quality but WoW is probably the biggest test for several reasons. Most important of those is that, however you slice it, WoW is a difficult game to watch. Unlike every other game in the e-sports fold, WoW is more or less un-watchable on its own. With CS and WC3, for example, commentators are a nice (or not so nice, possibly) addition. Not strictly necessary but useful.
With the spectator tool for WoW still fairly sub-par a WoW commentator has to know exactly what’s going on and has to be able to explain it to the viewer quickly and in detail. ESL’s duo this past weekend did a fantastic job. Despite the juvenile banter between games – which bordered on bullying at times – the stream was most enjoyable.
The actual commentary was fantastic and made light of the difficulties inherent in the subject matter. Even the mage/priest mirrors in many of the latter games were made intriguing by the English pair’s commentary.
Hafu is a girl. We Get it!
The obsession with Hafu from previous events seemed to have disappeared as well. Perhaps because Fnatic (or should I say “Hafu’s team”) didn’t get far, they weren’t the focus of the whole broadcast for once, and it was better for it.
"Perhaps because “Hafu’s team” didn’t get far, they weren’t the focus of the whole broadcast for once, and it was better for it."
Once teams have adjusted to the patch; if Fnatic can learn to play another class; if they perform better at the next event we’ll see whether it becomes World of Hafucraft again. One could argue that 2GD has an excuse, being a former Fnatic player and manager, but the interviewer didn’t go and speak to Glick about the patch, did he?
Whatever happens in Seoul next month, the casting will be top notch if ESL takes Mr Harding and his sidekick along for the ride. Although WoW is still a problematic spectator game, commentators like these two make it a whole lot easier to follow without being patronising.
The Zechs Files will be back in the confessional next Tuesday.

2DG and the other guy (i think zalmah or sth like that) were great and kept entertaining through the sometimes very long waiting times between matches
also it was great to watch since it was played in 3.0 and the games were incredibly fast paced
was a bit dissapointed that x6 didn t go all the way to the final but all respect to them for getting as far as they did
the simple truth is that RMPs in this tour had an overwhelming advantage since they played this (now ridiculously overpowered compared to other popular pre 3.0 setups) setup for a long time meanwhile
u could see how each game x6 fell further behind the competition
they had a god start but then just couldn t keep up with the RMP competition
well anyway it was a very entertaining event
imo the best wow event so far
Watching WoW wouldn't be the same without either of them. TooGood's amazing humour makes for some really entertaining broadcasting.
*2GD
*x6 were falling behind because with each game RMPs were absorbing the content of 3.0 and used it to their advantage better
*good not god
but still i rather watch hltv than esl for cs games just cos you feel more into it =P
yeah i agree with that, especially in the montreal masters played in 3.0 when it had only been live for a week, the players were a bit clueless at times. considering the number of wow players they should really make a wowtv =P... but then maybe it would be terrible without the shouters ;)
"it s all about DA MAGE
did u see what i just did there matt?
pretty clever, huh?"
:D
WoW has a long way to go before it's up there with the likes of the WC3 and SC casters!
she understands the game and does the job
but she s nowhere near as funny as 2GD at wow (and he understands what s going on and also explains the events for audience)
but my personal favourite caster is definitly Tasteless
in combination with lilsusie at gomtv they realy make up for the best caster duo there is (imo)
also note that this may be because SC is probably the most interesting e-sport to observe :)
sadly there is no way you can spectate the game yourself and move around with the camera and stuff like that, wich would make these things much more enjoyable i guess.
but i still have the feeling the casters miss the key-situations.. so many times.. they're sitting on X .. OH Y IS DOWN ?!?! hehe
They do discuss different strategies and what teams might try to do or what they believe they should do. But the banter they have in between that is just priceless and I would miss it a lot if it ever goes away.
I don't really see how WoW is a joke to watch compared to Counter-Strike. Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it a joke.
I don't know StarCraft. I know it's an RTS like WarCraft so I have a slight understanding of how it works, but I have never played the game and I have no intention of doing so, and when I watch a StarCraft match I have no idea who is winning or who is losing because I don't know the game.
Does that make StarCraft unwatchable? Does that mean StarCraft lack ANY visual indicators?
I thought wearing a tie on Sunday would earn me some respect, but it didn't make any difference.
Next show I will out do him in every way possible. Especially when it comes to dance moves.
but u burned 2GD quite a few times as well :)
oh and btw Croatia is not in EU :) (yet)
although the recent killings in Zagreb (Croatia's capital) may be a threath to 2GD :P
I watched 2GD and ReDeYe cast the Counter Strike 1.6 final this weekend, though. I'm not really a fan of 2GD; self-confidence is great, but it can't compensate for everything. Most companies will try and finding a balance by using different sorts of casters together. But, it doesn't always work.
I personally like Joe, ReDeYe and TosspoT. Joe's style is nice. He builds a nice tempo, and then carries it into a climax. But, he doesn't go over the top. It's clinical and objective. ReDeYe is similar to TosspoT, but varies and has a more formal style. He's usually informative and helps stimulate the excitement in 'lost causes'. TosspoT, well he's TosspoT. If he's casting a game he either plays or enjoys - it's obvious. He has the most insight and can spot things happening before the players even know it themselves.
Perhaps it's too soon to judge 2GD. I know he's interested, or at least was in improving his casting. Hopefully we'll see improvement in the future.
On a separate note: it's nice to see the ESL finally concentrating on their 'English' audience. Hopefully it works out for them!
After Montreal I told him that I never want to cast with him, see him, hear him or smell him again but unfortunately we currently have to share the same flat. It's a difficult situation and my only other option at the moment is sleeping on the streets, which I might resort to tonight if he steps over the line again.
Good words Zechs, cheers!
But I have to agree that TooGood is doing too good job as a commentator. :)
According to SK's website platform, you have only few seconds (30-60?) of time to edit your comment. Dat sucks.
edit: Time for editing is 80 seconds. Notice that clock @ edit input. :D
